Mullaghmore Head and Classiebawn Castle

Classiebawn Castle is a country house built for The 3rd Viscount Palmerston on an estate on the Mullaghmore peninsula near the village of Cliffoney, County Sligo. The current castle was largely built in the late 19th century and overlooks Mullaghmore Head.

Mullaghmore is world famous for its big wave surfing, a sight I have yet to see. Conditions rarely stack up, but heading in to the winter and with the promise of Atlantic storms, the conditions become more likely and so does the spectacle of seeing some of the world’s best surfers in action.

Mullaghmore Head and Classiebawn Castle

The conditions on the evening I took this were mild but still there were head height waves breaking in the shore where I was stood. The low rumble of the waves shifting huge boulders was particularly eerie and I can tell you I was on high alert. My original intention was to catch one of the waves at full height to fill the frame on the right, but the temptation to shoot a slightly more calm sea felt a bit more suited to the sunset and the shape of the rocks that point to the castle.
